Research emphasis¡G

 
  • Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)¡GPatent, Copyright, Trademark, and Trade Secrets are the core subjects to develop. Ever since 1997, NCTU has held annual National Intellectual Property Symposia. In June of 2000, The University has played a leading role regarding the research of patent and related area and commits itself to the interaction and cooperation with the international academic .

  • Legal Aspects of High Technology Development¡GThe study on the regulation and ethics of the Internet and e-commerce, biotechnology, environmental protection and communication, the integration of legal system, industry and technology development.

  • Business and Competition Laws¡Gincluding Fair Trade and Competition Laws, such as IPR and competition Laws, the interrelationship between environment and industry.

  • American Legal Studies¡GIt is undeniable that the United States has become a dominant player in international trade and a leader in shaping the global legal agenda. Taiwan, despite its civil law tradition, is increasingly influenced by the U.S. legal system. American Legal Studies is thus a major part of our research and teaching.

  • Chinese business and technology laws¡GThe Institute has been keeping close ties with leading Law Schools and Universities in China, including China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Tsinhua University, Fudan University, etc. The Institute periodically exchanges legal literature with Nanjing University. We also keep close contact with IP institutes and practitioners in China.
   
II. National and international forums and seminars
 
  • Since 1997, the Institute has held annual National Intellectual Property Symposium. In November, 2000, it has renamed to National Technology Law Forum: The issues included: Biotechnology, Public Construction, International Trade Law, and Intellectual Property Law.
  • In June, 2000, the Institute held National Technology Law Forum: Internet and E-Commerce Patents.
  • In July, 2001, the Institute held WTO and China Inland Market Management and Law Symposium.
  • In October, 2001, the Institute held International Patent Symposium.
  • In October, 2001, the Institute held"Taiwan’s Accession to the WTO" Forum.
  • In January, 2002, the Institute held U.S. Patent Practice Seminar.
  • In January, 2002, the Institute held"Strategies for Investment in China under the WTO Framework"Lectures.
  • In February, 2002, the Institute held Cyber Crime and Internet Law Symposium.
  • In February, 2002, the Institute held European Biotechnology Patent Symposium.
  • In March, 2002, the Institute held"EC Industrial Designs Protection"Lectures .
  • In April, 2002, the Institute held The Status Quo and Prospects of Cross-Strait Intellectual Property Rights Forum.
  • In April, 2002, the Institute held Information Law Forum.
  • In May, 2002, the Institute held lecture by Professor Tom Campbell from Stanford University, School of Law (former Congressman, Dean of Business School, UC Berkeley).
  • In August, 2002, the Institute held Internet Law and Intellectual Property Symposium.
  • In November, 2002, lecture delivered by Charlie Van Horn, an authority on U.S. patent practice.
  • In December, 2002, the Institute held U.S. Patent Prosecution and Litigation Practices Seminar.
  • In December, 2002, the Institute held"Understanding Patent Litigation at the U.S. International Trade Commission"Seminar.
  • Since March, 2003, the Institute has held TSMC Law Lectures annually.
  • In March, 2003, NCTU held U.S. Patent Practices Seminar.
  • In October, 2003, NCTU held Internet and E-commerce Regulation and Crime Prevention Conference.
   
III. Largest annual national symposium on technology law
 
  • Ever since 1997, the Institute has held National intellectual Property Symposia.
  • Discussing issues related to the integration of industry and practice.
  • More than six hundred delegates attended, and the enrollment keeps increasing annually.
  • From 2000 to 2003, the size has become bigger and bigger, and the conference adopted National Technology Law Symposium as its new name. There were more in-depth discussions related to new technology law issues, and those continually draw attention from various personnel in the fields of law and technology.
    Topic: Digital Music and Copyrights, Biotechnology and Genetically Modified Food, Internet and E-Commerce Law, Domain Name Dispute, and Intellectual Property Law, and WTO and Environment Law.
  • Analyze and discuss problems arising from interaction among technology, law, and industry, and seek solutions.
  • Reflect on current law and its related topics. Legal problem arising from new technology has become a core subject for industry development and competition.
  • The core areas are: Intellectual Property Rights, Civil Laws and Dispute and Management, Internet and Electronic Business Law, Biotechnology Law.
  • Technology Transfer and Promotion.
  • Technology Transfer and Authorization, Patent Analysis, Property Rights Promotion.
  • Intellectual Property Rights Dispute.
  • China Intellectual Property Rights Investment Practice.
  • The Legal Environment for Public Construction.
   
IV. International conference and academic exchange
 

The legal challenges presented by new technologies have rightly grabbed global attention, as evident in the number of universities or research institutes dedicating their resources in related studies. The Institute has been keeping close ties with leading academic institutes in the Unite States, the United Kingdom, France, and China. Through collaborations and academic exchange activities with these fellow institutes, the Institute seeks to enrich our students?perspectives, enabling them to see issues from a global point of view.

  • May, 2001—Academic conferences in Beijing.
  • September, 2001 Trip to Germany.
    Inviting Germany law professors to teach in Taiwan.
  • October 2001—Lectures on means-plus-function and biotechnology patents by U.S., Japanese and Korean patent experts.
  • January, 2002, lectures on U.S. patent prosecution, litigation, and licensing by attorneys of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP.
  • August, 2002—Trips to the U.S.A.
    Visiting George Washington University, the U.S. Supreme Court, The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, and the U.S. International Trade Commission.
  • October, 2002?Signing exchange agreement with Nanjing University, China.
  • February, 2003—Signing collaboration agreement with Singapore IP Academy.
  • October, 2003—Discussing exchange program with University of Sheffield, Queen Mary College, UK.
  • December, 2003—Discussing exchange programs with University of Illinois Urbana Champagne, and Santa Clara University.
